Those who know Roald Dahl as a master of macabre comedy will not be disappointed by this volume of his collected shorter fiction which includes all the famous stories, but they may be surprised by less familiar items. These include fantastic vignettes from his years in the wartime RAF, and tales of rural England which reveal the writer to be a close if alarming observer of every-day life. Taken together, they present a portrait of the complex and subtle artist sometimes obscured by Dahl’s popular image as one of the greatest children’s writers of the twentieth century. The present volume includes for the first time all the stories in chronological order as established by Dahl’s biographer, Jeremy Treglown, in consultation with the Dahl estate.
