📖 Educating for Cultures of Peace within the Academy. A Holistic Approach to Peace Studies in the University for the New Millennium.
Peace, understood as a way of being and relating in
our world, represents a fundamental epistemological
challenge within and for institutions of higher
education. Many peace programs have been born in this
postmodern era rife with conflict to offer a
foundation for peace education. This book presents a
compelling examination of the challenges to bridging
peace and education within educational institutions
through a regional study based in the US. Personal
interviews were conducted to ascertain whether
structural impediments exist within the academy
inhibiting a scholarly inquiry of peace with the
results indicating that ideology and the role of
research concerning peace are the predominate
institutional impediments or barriers to a holistic
and effective peace education program within the
university setting. This analysis provides a critical
step in the development of peace studies within the
United States and should be especially useful to
peace and conflict scholars, deans and administrators
of liberal arts schools, as well as the engaged peace
activist exploring the connections between peace and
education.
